Quote, Summary, Source Analysis, and Citation #5

“Boys typically send and receive 30 texts a day; girls typically send and receive 80 messages per day. The report found that teens typically make or receive five voice calls per day. So basically, teens send about 10 times more text messages on their phones than phone calls. Also, 64 percent of parents say they examine the contents of their child's phone. And e-mail is basically useless to teens.”
A problem that is now occurring is the frequent use of texting. From the quote above, teens send more about 10 times more text messages on their phones than they make calls”, this shows that teens are not getting the practice they need for speaking out loud.
I think this is bad problem for teenagers’ future nowadays because of texting. Teens are neglecting the effect of speaking out loud, and this can be very harsh for businesses they will have later in life. After all the, first thing we learned to do when we were babies was to speak.

Quote, Summary, Source Analysis, and Citation #4

“A new language created by teens has evolved over the years, bringing to educators' attention the possible negative or positive aspects of it. Educators debate whether this electronically abbreviated version of English, known as texting, affects students' formal writing in class or simply encourages communication.”
The new language of texting has been causing some controversy to teachers, professors, and educators. The language of texting is a shorter way of writing a word out, and making abbreviations to certain words. Teenagers have said texting with abbreviations is quicker and are easier than having to write out the word. Some educators have discussed with one another that texting could be beneficial to teenagers because they can get the practice of writing. But, other educators say it is very bad, because teenagers are writing in “codes”, which is not very helpful to their writing habit.
Although this could be easier and quicker for teenagers, it reflects back to their writing skills and they could take in that habit of writing in abbreviations. Therefore, I think the new language of texting from teens is not very helpful to writing if they only use codes to shorten their words.

This picture relates to my topic because the person who is texting, is obviously not paying attention to his school work. Because he is not paying attention like he or she should be, his grades may soon collapse because he had not listened to his assignments. It has been proven that when teens text, they tend to block out any information that is given to them while texting.

Graph/chart/map and Citation

This picture relates to my topic because it shows how broad texting is becoming nowadays to teens. Texting is used more than emails, from the graph above. My blog benefits from this because it also shows how important it is to lower the texting rate because it is bad for them, from my previous posts about the health part of texting.

Quote, Summary, Source Analysis, and Citation #3

“In your opinion, is texting good for or an enemy of grammar? Text messaging has surely given our society a quick means through which to communicate, taking out the need for capitalization, punctuation, and the use and knowledge of sentence structure and the detail that makes a good statements great.”

This quote explains that texting causes teens’ to have a “new” form of writing that does not coincide with the regular use of English grammar like punctuation and capitalization. Texting has made educators suggest that this is the new age form of messaging that may be hindering todays’ teens’ abilities of writing and social skills. Many teachers say teenagers’ carry over their text message writing towards their school assignments.

I think if teens continue to text, their grades will fall tremendously, and they obviously will lack the ability of writing and/or speaking skills that is not correct. I, myself do not use any special format of texting, I use the same grammar techniques that I would, as if I were writing an essay. Other teenagers’ should too!

Teens' may have been brought up to texting. The image above shows, and also gives you a visual representation as to how the world is becoming from texting so much. As seen in the little girl is "zoned" into the phone, not knowing that she is hurting herself because she's very young. I think little kids should not be able to use cell phones because they are that young and do not know any better.

“They do it late at night when their parents are asleep. They do it in restaurants and while crossing busy streets. They do it in the classroom with their hands behind their back. They do it so much their thumbs hurt. The phenomenon is beginning to worry physicians and psychologists, who say it is leading to anxiety, distraction in school, falling grades, repetitive stress injury and sleep deprivation.”
This quote is saying that because teens’ text, physicians are beginning to worry about how teens’ will be affected in their future. Because they text so frequently, and pretty much everywhere, it can cause distraction in school, falling grades, and sleep deprivation. An example is from a teenage girl, who texted so much her thumbs started to ache. Therefore, now she does not text as much as she used to.
I think teens’ who text everywhere and ALL the time should know how they are hurting themselves. It may seem like fun, but in the long run, they could face some harsh problems. This is a problem all around that is soon going to be seen everywhere. Psychologists are studying what effects teens’ will face, and before they get to bad, I think teens should lower the amount of texting they do.

The girl in this picture shows how texting is effecting the World. As you can see, she is not paying attention to what is going on around her. This relates to my topic because, when teens have their phones, and are texting, they do not pay attention one hundred percent to what is going on out side their "texting life", or the dangers that could happen. The girl in this photo is walking and texting, meanwhile, there could be a car coming her way, but she would not know.

“Socially interactive technologies (SITs), such as instant messaging and text messaging, are beginning to redefine the social networks of today’s youth. By offering fast-paced, inexpensive, online communication, SITs allow for new online youth social networks to form and evolve.”
This quote basically says texting, and the usage of instant messaging is now redefining the social network of today’s youth. It also means it is changing the way teens are living and how they are socially inactive.
Having teens’ text or instant message, are ruining their communication future, and how they will be in life. Therefore, these online networks, in turn, may affect the offline social and friendship networks in which youth are immersed, and no longer talk to people face to face. It appears as though youth may have similar social uses for text messaging as they have for instant messaging (IM), email, and mobile phones; text messaging may often be used in conjunction with these other technologies in multitasking. Socially Interactive Technologies are becoming broader in the World nowadays, and I think it can result in being very bad for teens’ future outlook. Email and text messaging allow for rapid, asynchronous communication within one’s peer network; IM allows for synchronous communication among many friends at once said the article. Texting and the use of technology is changing the way teenagers live, and how their being changed because of texting. I think if teens would put their phones down, they could actually "live life" to the fullest, and not be focused on the dangers of texting.

What I Want To Know About My Topic:

Why do teenagers text so much? Is it an emotional or social problem they have? Some teens text more because it is the only way they can get their feelings out. Cell phones are a way of getting information from  person to person, or talking with them. But, it also breaks down the original social interaction of having conversations face to face with people. How will texting effect our future for teens? I think the people around the world would be very autonomous, and not have any personality. Also, I want to know how teens are hurting themselves? Personally, I think they are hurting themselves mentally, and even physically because, being focused on something that is bad for you can really harm your body. Many teenagers assiduously text, making every word or message count, not caring what may be going on around them. They are showing lack of social skills, which is horrible. It is bad because you need social skills for just about every job. Although teenagers would find ‘not texting’ to be very hard, it would certainly benefit them in the end.

What I Know About My Topic

Texting may be really fun to some people. But, if you knew what it can cause to your future, it could change your mind about texting so frequently. From an article in Teen Vogue magazine, I learned that texting can cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in your wrists, and thumbs. Carpal Tunnel is like arthritis, but it can be far worse. This syndrome is caused by texting or typing too much on an electronic device. If teenagers’ would put down their phones, they could easily by-pass this effect. Another effect on teenagers texting so much is brain damage/ or cancer. Phones give off radiation, therefore the more they use a cell phone, the more you have a chance to get brain cancer. I know some teenagers sleep with their phones right beside them, and I think this is horrible because you should be relaxed when you are sleeping. The radiation from a phone is quiet dangerous, and should not be taken lightly!

Story Behind My Topic

Texting has become a humongous part of an average teenagers’ life. Everywhere I go, I constantly see teenagers’ texting. They could be at the mall, or at the park, and they would be texting. From my perspective, texting is great way to get a hold of people, or talk to them. But, I also think it can easily be taken out of hand. Take a look at the World now; most teenagers are texting these days. It’s awful, because averages of them do not talk on the phone, or have social skills. I think about what their lives will be like in twenty years. How will they be functioning later in life? One time I was in the mall, and a group of girls all had their phones texting, and walking down the mall. Because each of them had their heads down, looking at their phone, they did not see an elderly lady coming towards them. One of the girls ran right into the lady because she was texting. Obviously this was a mistake. But, it could have went better if she was paying attention to what was going on around her, not what was on her cell phone.
